QUEANBEYAN’S fifth grade cricketers have had a strange old season to date with a few topsy-turvy results that have been bemusing to say the least.

Unfortunately our boys lost to Eastlake over the weekend by three wickets. The result has left the side in fifth position on the ladder with a record of three wins, three losses and two draws (washouts) from their eight games so far.
But it’s the game against ANU a few weeks back that will make you chuckle. Our boys batted first and made 116 on a decent deck at Town Park. A tight bowling effort to follow was obviously necessary but what ensued was remarkable.
Up stepped John Fern and Jim Martin who tore through the batting line up and in 11.5 overs the game was over, with ANU making the paltry team total of 12 runs. Yes, that isn’t a typo – all out for 12.
Fern ended up with 7/7 in his 5.5 overs including a hat trick, while Martin finished with 3/5 from his six overs. That surely must be one of the lowest totals in ACT grade cricket history.
A few weeks later Tuggeranong were the visitors to Town Park and on what could be described as a slightly tougher pitch the visitors batted first and were all out for 30.
Dave Jensen took 5/12 off nine overs and Troy Drayton 3/3.We chased the total down losing two wickets and by all accounts the players were home and dry for a sit-down lunch. Let’s hope we are on the winning side once again if there are to be similar results this season.
Also, congratulations to the Queanbeyan contingent that was part of the ACT’s championship winning side at this year’s Over-60s national championships in Adelaide.
Queanbeyan’s own Neil and Vince Bulger, together with Jim Martin were part of the victorious team. Well done fellas!
In other news, Juan Manuel Marquez finally got the better of arch nemesis Manny Pacquiao in their blockbuster fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas this past weekend.
The Mexican brutally knocked out the ten-time Filipino world champion in the sixth round with a short right hand in what was their fourth meeting since 2004.
In a bout that is already being anointed as the fight of the year, Marquez finally gained his revenge for the two controversial losses he previously suffered at the hands of Pacquiao. Pity there was no title on the line.
The superfight between Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather and Pacquiao also seems to have been KO’d in the process. I think Floyd will be smiling inside.
