Recent Karabar High graduate Sara Turner will be back on stage again this year and said she was looking forward to another evening of positive Christmas cheer in the park.
“It's always a great night, and the atmosphere is so good,” she said.
“As a singer it's always easy and relaxed, and it doesn't put a lot of stress on me which is a good thing. You just go out there and have fun and don't worry if you make a mistake: it's all good.”
The talented local singer was nominated for a Canberra Theatre Award this year for her performance of Regina Spektor’s ‘Samson’ at the Karabar High School Cabaret, and has performed in many local musicals.
She’ll be taking a less traditional approach toward this year’s concert, and will perform a selection of songs from artists including indie pop acts Sia and Phoenix, as well as British songstress Adele, who Miss Turner cites as a major inspiration.
“I really do love Adele. A lot of people think I'm very similar to her in a lot of ways,” she laughed.
There will also be a special reading of the Christmas story by Archdeacon Ian Palmer at 7pm before the Carols commence. The Brindabella Chorus and Shenanigans will then lead the crowd through some of the best-known Christmas Carols, including Jingle Bells, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Silent Night and many more.
The highlight of the event will occur around 8pm when Santa Claus will makes a special appearance.
Queanbeyan mayor Tim Overall invited residents to get into the festive spirit and come along to carols at the park on Sunday.
“Queanbeyan’s Carols by Candlelight is a wonderful community event and Queanbeyan Park is the ideal location. Families can lay out a picnic rug and sit back and enjoy the entertainment,” Cr Overall said.
Candles and songbooks will be available on the day at Queanbeyan Park. The event will be cancelled if there is inclement weather – residents can check Council’s website for updates.
