The man is charged with aggravated serious criminal trespass, aggravated assault causing serious harm, kidnapping and sexual assault after a tomahawk attack in the Mid North town of Laura.
Bail was not applied for and the man is due to appear in court on March 25.
The identity of the man has been suppressed due to the charges relating to sex offences.
How the tomahawk attack unfolded
The attack left a man with a large laceration to the side of his head and a trail of blood from a Laura home to the local hospital.
Investigations by police revealed that the man was allegedly assaulted with a tomahawk during a home invasion-style attack.
He was transferred to Port Augusta Hospital for surgery.
It is believed the two men are known to each other.
Police and forensic officers searched a house on Barnes Street in Port Pirie belonging to the accused.
A local Laura resident said of the man hit with the tomahawk "you couldn't meet a nicer bloke."
