It’s the third year running rugby league stories have generated the most reader interest at the Queanbeyan Age website.
Between them, the Kangaroos and the Blues secured nine of the top 20 most clicked write ups over the past 12 months.
September’s Canberra Raiders Cup and reserve grade grand final showdowns between the two clubs generated particularly heavy traffic with the top three highest rating stories dedicated to the cross-town derbies.
The Age’s photo gallery of the Kangaroos’ 17-16 first grade grand final victory was also by far and away the most trafficked sports gallery of the year generating nearly 50,000 page views.
Across codes however, and the Queanbeyan Whites’ mid-season revival saw the side surge into contention as the city’s most popular team based on web traffic with Adam Fahey’s troops taking out five of the top 20 spots.
It’s also clear the club’s long-standing rivalry with the Tuggeranong Vikings remains as provocative as ever.
The Age’s wrap of the Whites’ crucial 29-28 victory over Tuggeranong at Campese Field in August was the Age’s fourth biggest sports story of the year online.
Grand final reports of the Whites’ second grade title win against the Vikings, and the club’s Colts side’s grand final loss to the same opponents also rated strongly.
Netball also proved popular with the sport grabbing three of the top 20 spots.
The Age’s photo gallery of the Bev Woodward Gala Day and March Past generated the most interest slotting in at number seven on the list with people also interested in Jerrabomberra’s inter-district grand final win.
Other stories that made the list were the Age’s coverage of the Queanbeyan Rodeo in March and the Queanbeyan Pro Am in February.
A lone cricket story also scraped in with coverage of the club’s 150th anniversary in February occupying the 20th and final spot on the list.
