QUEANBEYAN trainer Tony Sergi believes five-year-old Diamond to Pegasus is in as good a position to claim the $50,000 Camarena on Black Opal Stakes Day as when he won the race last year.

Diamond to Pegasus dead-heated with the Joseph Pride trained Shamus in last year’s Camerena but has since failed to fire a shot in anger.
The Fusaichi Pegasus sired gelding has run unplaced in each of his past five runs.
But Sergi said he remained confident Diamond to Pegasus was well positioned to repeat last year’s effort when he lines up in the same race on Sunday.
“He’s looking very, very good,” Sergi said. “Even though last year he went in with three or four wins that preparation and this year he’s got no wins, he’s had excuses for what’s happened. So I’ll give him a chance.
“This preparation he’s had issues with wet tracks and also chipping his knee, just little things like that that stop you. But we’ve got it sorted now so we’re hoping he might be able to turn it around.”
In just his third start as a two-year-old, Diamond to Pegasus claimed victory in the $100,000 Canonbury at Royal Randwick back in 2011. But he has placed in town just once since.
Since last year’s Camerena, the Fusaichi Pegasus sired gelding has raced exclusively in Sydney, shuttling between Canterbury, Warwick Farm and Royal Randwick.
The Chestnut sprinter has shown better form closer to home however, having won in two of its past four starts in Canberra. He has also saluted in both of his only two starts at Queanbeyan.
