Queanbeyan City Council has made it all the more enjoyable by installing a viewing platform that is just weeks away from completion.

From that vantage point members of the public will be able to see from Karabar to Queanbeyan West with Mount Majura and Kowen Pine Forest in the distance.

Queanbeyan City Council manager of environment and health Natasha Abbott said the platform will soon be officially opened to the public.

While the steel-framed deck is already finished, workers are still installing the finishing touches including two benches, safety bollards and signage.

The project was signposted in the Mount Jerrabomberra Plan of Management (2004) and estimated to cost $36, 900.

"It's been something that we've wanted to do for quite some time," Mrs Abbott said.

"We hope it becomes something of a destination spot for residents as well as tourists."

Mrs Abbott said future plans are in the works for sunrise viewings and morning teas at the platform.

Although it is only publicly accessible by foot, the council also plans to hold "Open Days" for groups, including the disabled and elderly, to be taken on tour of Mount Jerrabomberra by local environmentalists.

Karabar family the Howarths are regular visitors to Mount Jerrabomberra. They often make a trip up every six weeks.

They said the platform was a great addition and particularly liked the idea of having a bench as opposed to rocks to sit on.

"You can see the whole view of Queanbeyan from up here," Teileah, 12, said.

"We can see the back of our house, you can see the fountain in Town Park from here. It's a good secret spot. I love coming up here."

Queanbeyan City Council has other projects in the pipeline to highlight some of the region's natural wonders. A platypus viewing platform near the Suspension Bridge is currently in the planning stage.
