Council and the local RSL sub-branch are working together to create the ANZAC commemorative garden adjacent to the Queanbeyan War Memorial Swimming Pool. It will feature 100 rose plants bearing the signature RSL rose- a deep burgundy in colour with a flash of peach in the middle.

"It looks like a fire with a yellow tongue," sub branch secretary Daryl Patch said.

"We're still in the planning stages with Council, but there will be a path through it [the garden], and a pagoda.

"It's something that will be left behind for the people of Queanbeyan for the centenary of ANZAC," he said.

Queanbeyan mayor Tim Overall said another specially-propagated rose, the Red Cross rose, would also be planted near the site to mark 100 years of a Queanbeyan Red Cross Branch.

"The Queanbeyan Red Cross is one of the oldest, continually running Red Cross branches in Australia," Cr Overall said.

And Moore Park - named after former Queanbeyan mayor Richard Moore - was a particularly fitting site for the gardens, he said.

"Richard Moore and his wife Agnes Moore lost their son at Villers-Bretonneux, and it was Agnes Moore together with Mrs Hincksman - who also lost a son in the Great War - who formed the Red Cross Queanbeyan Branch exactly 100 years ago this August," Cr Overall said.

"So to have a RSL Memorial Rose Garden co-located with a Red Cross rose garden commemorating 100 years of the Red Cross society in Queanbeyan, I think, is very fitting."

The RSL is also planning to relocate the Boer War memorial in Lowe Street to the Moore Park site.

Meanwhile, Queanbeyan City Council has applied for $23,000 in funding for the project through the Department of Veterans' Affairs centenary of ANZAC funding pool. The first roses will be planted at the site in July.
