Yass Roos continue great start to season

The Aussie Hotel Yass Roos travelled to Greenway Oval last Sunday for round five against the Tuggeranong Hawks and came away with a comfortable win.

Despite some absences, the Roos still fielded a strong side and set about the task of keeping their copy book clean with a good first quarter return. The Roos led 4-7-31 to 0-1-1 with the only negative being some wayward shots at goal that stunted the margin.

The Hawks offered little resistance for most of the game but it still felt that the Roos were not quite capitalising as they should. Matches like this are a chance to build team cohesion and get the set plays organised but it was really only in the third quarter that the Roos let loose with eight unanswered goals.

The final score saw the Roos take a solid win 23-20-158 to 1-4-10.  Although that sounds impressive, to give some context, Goulburn handed out a 220 to one hiding to the Hawks in their last encounter. The Roos, while happy, cannot afford to be complacent this early in the season. The wins are important but it is the preparation for the tough teams that really counts.

Best players were Darren Pfeiffer, Daniel Smith, Dave Willersdorf, Nick Burridge, Jamie Duncan and Aaron 'AJ' Wilson. With 23 goals there were 13 goal scorers as the team shared the spoils. Young Jak Willcox spent some time at full-forward for a return of five goals. Steve O'Brien, who usually holds down centre half-back admirably, got a run at full-forward as well but kicked like a back-man with two goals and three behinds (joking Steve). Others to contribute majors were AJ Wilson, Marc Brooks, Jake Forth, Ben Serafin and Lennon Thurtell with two goals each. Shane Lees, Tom Hanson, Angus Burleigh, Nick Burridge, Doug Watchorn and Dave Willersdorf added singles.

There were no major injuries but the news on Simon Goyne's shoulder injury from last match was not good as he may be facing surgery to repair ligament damage.

It has been a strange start to the season with the AFL Canberra aggregated fixture seeing us at round five having only played two matches with two general byes and round two washed out. The Roos leapt to second spot on the ladder behind Goulburn who have opened the season in fine style with two very big wins. The other three undefeated teams Ainslie, Cootamundra and Molonglo make up the top five at this early stage of the season.

This sets up a very interesting match next Sunday May 4 when Yass take on Ainslie at Joe O'Connor Park from 2pm. Both teams are undefeated and both are looking to maintain early momentum. The home ground will hopefully help the Roos and a big home crowd supporting the team would also help. Be there and cheer on the locals.

I'll see you at the Footy. Go the Roos!
