Queanbeyan Mayor Tim Overall said it had been planned to move junior cricket from Wright Park to the Showground to ease pressure on the East Queanbyean facility that is already used for rugby league, soccer and athletics.

The Showground needs a number of improvements to enable sports action there again.

The $23,000 grant is a part of a wider $200,000 allocation to Monaro from the state government, and Cr Overall said the grant enabled Council's plan to move cricket from Wright Park to the Showground to provide more space for 1500 junior soccer players.

"One of the opportunities was to convert Wright Park upper from junior cricket to a football field and find a new location for cricket, and the Showground is an ideal location," said Cr Overall.

Upgrades to the Showground will include a new cricket pitch, ground levelling works, improved grass maintenance and extra seating around the oval.

Upper Wright park will receive upgrades to the canteen facility as well as further ground-levelling work, improved field maintenance and fencing improvements.

"In the past all of the Showground's dirt roads have been sealed, we've removed the old dog trotting track as it failed safety standards, we have a more expansive field and we have new amenities and an improved grandstand," said Cr Overall.

Wright Park is also benefitting from a $78,000 state grant that was issued to the Council in December last year.
