The Queanbeyan Karabar High School student turned heads in March when he took out the junior division of the Moomba Masters event in Melbourne, which is billed as one of the largest tournaments of the sport in the world.

Although he crashed out of a finish at the Australian nationals tournament in Wagga Wagga at the end of March, he made the journey to Florida before the start of April, where he will likely base himself for a further five months as he seeks stardom in the sport.

After two tournaments to date in Florida, he had applied for the US Masters tournament on May 23, and was still awaiting confirmation on his entry.

McMahon's father Robert said Justin was loving the experience and is considering doing it all again in 2015.

"He's doing a fair bit of travel with American wakeboarders too," he said.

"His goal is to get on the podium in the junior pro men's nationals as that will give him a wildcard into the seniors."

Justin finished third at his first event in Orlando before crashing out of finals contention in his second dig three weeks later at the same venue.

He will now compete to progress towards the USA Nationals in Texas in July, before hoping to qualify for the World Championships back in Orlando in August.

It has been a big move for the 15-year old, who will virtually have to give up the rest of his school year up to follow his dream.

He is living in the city of Orlando with fellow Australian wakeboarder Chloe Mills and her father Tim, who owns the house.

"It now looks like he's going to be there for six months," said Mr McMahon.

"He's already on the way to completing his year ten. We just need to finalise some things from the distance education program."
