Volunteers are required for a minimum of four hours per week and will assist with duties like forming information flyers, sending victim packs, fixing display boards, assisting in catering for formal events and functions, photo copying, working on computers and other tasks of a similar nature.

Volunteers are not able to undertake certain tasks such as answering phones or station enquiries or travelling with police as they go about their regular duties.

"Our volunteers are extremely valuable," Senior constable Naomi Nemec said.

"Even though a lot of the work isn't out in amongst the community, what they do by assisting us back here behind the scenes allows police officers to get out in the community. It allows police officers to get out there and do the work that counts."

Volunteers must be Australian citizens or have permanent resident status, 18-years-old or over, possess good communication skills and have community credibility.

Prospective volunteers will be extensively screened and will undergo a police record and fingerprint check.

Applicants will be interviewed and provided training by local police.

They will be required to sign a year's contract to remain as a volunteer in policing.

This contract is renewed on a yearly basis depending on work performance.
