Fire broke out at the Bicentennial Drive property at around 2.25pm, and officers from both the Queanbeyan and ACT Fire Brigades quickly attended the scene.
Queanbeyan Station Commander Mark Beachcroft said the blaze rapidly took hold of the house and causing damage to 90 per cent of the house structure.
“It was fairly severe. It started at the rear of the property and got into the roof cavity, and it’s well and truly taken hold from there,” he said.
It took 30 minutes for firefighters to bring the fire under control, and traffic was blocked on the major Jerrabomberra thoroughfare for around two hours.
The homeowners also attended the scene and could do nothing but watch on as firefighters extinguished the fire in their family home. The local couple’s young son and dog were both home at the time the fire started, but neither were injured in the blaze.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
