Gallery: A day at the races

AMID an explosion of colour and floral print, Canberra local Jessica Pickering's classic black and white ensemble proved a hit with the judges at this year's Queanbeyan Cup Fashions on the Field.

Pickering's V-Neck black dress with contrasting white trim by Sydney designer and close family friend Michelle Garbin was accessorised by a matching pearl necklace and earrings, an envelope clutch and a wide brim hat.

A cream coloured blazer completed the 23-year-old Primary School teacher's outfit.

"I chose black and white because I think it's very classic and classy for the races," Pickering said. "I try to wear a hat because I think hats are very classic and you don't see as many hats at the races compared to fascinators."

Pickering said she was a regular racegoer and was looking forward to entering future Fashions on the Field contests in Canberra and Queanbeyan.

The men's competition was claimed by Jaye Hearne who also adopted a traditional monochrome look topped off by a fedora.

The winners of the men's and women's contests each won a weekend away for two to the Coachhouse Marina Resort in Batemans Bay.

In the juniors it was a six-way tie for the overall crown as Queanbeyan's youngest fashionistas displayed plenty of style and flair with a range of pastels proving especially popular.
