The merging of the two council areas means voting will not be conducted until 2017, when representatives will again be democratically elected. Until that time, an administrator, Tim Overall, is in place and the position allows him to make decisions for the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council.
Across NSW all councils that have been amalgamated, have had their elections deferred until 2017.
“This situation has the potential to cause confusion among some electors, particularly those who live, or are enrolled, in areas not conducting elections, bordering councils that are”, said Electoral Commissioner, John Schmidt.
He said the confusion could cause frustration if electors turn up to voting centres on election day only to be told they don’t need to vote.
