In Japan, anime — and its print equivalent manga — is a big part of popular culture and is consumed by people of all ages. There are heaps of different genres targeted at people across all demographics, and even cultural hubs where fans of specific genres gather (like Otome Road in the Tokyo suburb of Ikebukuro, famous for its dojinshi, or zines, aimed at nerdy women and girls).
