As the fire season draws closer, residents across the community are being encouraged to prepare their properties and check equipment necessary for the event of a fire.
Burra Brigade captain Sharon Field said this time of the year was ideal for preparing.
”Many people often leave their preparations to the last minute, so we welcome the opportunity to help people get all the information they need to feel safe and begin to make preparations on their properties for the start of the season,” she said.
Jerrabomberra Creek Brigade captain Phillip Clarke said there were two main dangers for rural properties in the region.
“Grass fires always loom as a large fire hazard, and uncleared debris and rubbish stacked near houses are perfect fuel for fire conditions,” he said.
Guises Creek Brigade captain Dave Wassall said his crews were flat out with their own preparations, including training and maintaining all the equipment necessary to serve the community.
“We think it’s great being able to recognise the many volunteers who put in many hours a week to serve our community,” Mr Wassall said
“We appreciate the time that people commit in joining the Rural Fire Service, and who acquire fulfilling benefits in developing skills and working in a team as part of a crew.”
Rev James Wood from St Pauls Anglican Church was proud to host the annual Blessing of the Fleet event over the weekend.
“With the third Biennial celebration upon us, I am delighted that the local Rural Fire Service Brigades feel that this is an important event, and that we can have a significant role in bringing the community together in celebrations like this,” Rev Wood said.
“As a faith community, we’re really grateful for the time and energy volunteers give to their local Rural Fire Service, and we’d like to acknowledge this commitment and wish our local crews a safe and courageous fire season.”
