Police have arrested 10 people so far in drug raids across the city, with more expected in the coming weeks.
Of the 10 arrested, four are in custody and six have been granted strict conditional bail to reappear before Queanbeyan Local Court in October and November.
The raids are part of Strike Force Lupo, set up to target the supply of the drug ice in Queanbeyan. Information provided by the public and a focused effort over three months by police led to the raids of seven homes and a car.
Police believe the Breaking the Ice forum, held in April, heightened community awareness and concern about the distribution and scourge of the drug ice. Information provided helped lead to the successful operation.
The chain of arrests began with 33-year-old Queanbeyan man Zlatko Mileski who was apprehended during a traffic stop on Stephens Road on Wednesday, September 14.
It is alleged Mileski was returning from the ACT after purchasing four ounces of methylamphetamine, commonly known as ice, with an estimated street value of nearly $30,000. Police seized the drugs and cash.
Mileski was charged with 13 offences including supplying a prohibited drug, possessing prohibited drugs and the more serious offence of supplying prohibited drugs on an ongoing basis.
He faced Queanbeyan Local Court on Thursday where he was refused bail.
On the same day, police searched a home on Wattle Street where they located ice, scales, drug packaging, computer equipment, cannabis leaf and seed.
Two ACT men, aged 21 and 22, were arrested and charged, one with custody of a knife in a public place and the other with possessing an unauthorised pistol respectively, and both were charged with possession or use of a prohibited weapon. They were granted conditional bail and will appear before the court in October.
A further six warrants were executed on Thursday, September 15 at two homes in Jerrabomberra and four in Queanbeyan.
A compound bow, phones, scales, drugs including cannabis and ice, a replica firearm and extendable baton were seized.
In Queanbeyan Local Court on Friday, four people faced charges related to the raids, of possession and supply of illicit substances, including “main player” Jamie Fulton, 33.
Police allege Fulton and her partner and co-accused Gary Rayner, 49, who also goes by the names Toe Cutter and Tattoo Gaz, formed and maintained the “business”, a joint criminal enterprise. They are both facing 16 charges.
Queanbeyan woman Charie O’Reilly, 27, also faced court on Friday charged with seven drug offences, including ongoing supply.
It is alleged she sold ice at venues including the Top Pub and McDonalds in Queanbeyan.
In one transaction, police allege in court documents O’Reilly attended a Lowe Street residence with Fulton and Rayner to purchase more than 28 grams of ice. It is alleged Rayner said O’Reilly was there to “test” the drugs.
O’Reilly was granted strict conditional bail in local court on Friday.
Facing six similar charges, Hank Geiger, 33, of Queanbeyan, was refused bail on Friday in front of his partner and son in court.
Magistrate Michael Antrum said the “scourge of drugs” was an increasing concern for citizens of Queanbeyan.
He said there was a “strong prosecution case” for each of the four people he remanded in custody and as such bail conditions could not effectively mitigate the risk of failing to appear, the seriousness of the offences, endangering the safety of the community or interfering with witnesses.
