Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council is partnering with The Cancer Support Group in support of the boat races at the Queanbeyan River Festival on Saturday 29 October.
The Cancer Support Group chief executive Melissa Gardiner said she was looking forward to seeing what made it on to the river.
“While the races are really exciting, it is just as much fun seeing whether the build your own boats actually float,” Ms Gardiner said.
There is still time to register for the boat races.
There are three categories of races including the build-your-own, inflatables and the kayak races.
The races are organised by the Eden-Monaro Cancer Support Group. Entry into the races is used as a fundraiser for the cancer support group. To register your boat, visit thecancersupportgroup.org.au
The team at Service NSW Queanbeyan have been working on their boats and are entering three boats into the races, working on two of their own constructions and one boat in the inflatables races.
Service NSW team member Tracey Fletcher-Groeneweg said building the boats and racing them on the lake were great team building experiences.
“This year, we are going for a recycled approach with our boats and are looking forward to getting them in the water,” she said.
Service NSW has been working on a “bathtub boat”, complete with pool noodles and inflatables tyres to help it float, and a “car” which will be completed with large inflatable tyres, a steering wheel and a number plate.
