The aspiring young actors will be honing their skills and bringing a smile or a shudder to the thousands of revelers expected at this year’s annual Boogong event, on Saturday, October 29.
As they roam the streets, the music will pump on the hour and the young stars will break to thrill the crowd with a flash mob dance routine.
“Last year it was set to Michael Jackson’s Thriller and it was a huge hit with the crowds,” said Canberra Youth Theatre artistic director Katie Cawthorne.
“This year the troop has something even more exciting up their sleeve set to the tune of The Addams Family theme music.”
Ms Cawthorne said the actors were thrilled to have the experience of a professional acting job.
“Not only do they have to audition for roles but they have to stay in character for four hours, which is a big ask for any actor,” she said.
The young players will develop their own characters during a five-hour workshop where they will be given scenarios and props to help flesh out their colourful scenes.
“In one workshop, witches were asked to create a spell or ritual they could perform. The actors developed their own language and decided to turn the spells on each other which meant they had to act as frogs and rats and whatever other nasty creatures they were turned in to.
“It is a really great experience to learn how to interact with people when you’re in character and to deal with different situations – including what to do if a little one gets scared.”
The spooky setting of Beltana Park, with a witch’s den, haunted graveyard and giant spider web, will make a ghostly backdrop for the event.
The Boogong extravaganza runs from 5-9pm at Googong.
There will be a DJ and disco for the kids from 5pm, live music from 8.30pm and fireworks at 9pm so be sure to get into the spirit, dress up and sink your teeth into this thrilling night of free family fun.
A free bus will depart Queanbeyan Bus Interchange (platform 4) at 4.15pm. Another bus will depart from the Jerrabomberra Shopping Centre (bus bay on Limestone Drive) at 4.30pm. Return buses will depart from Googong at 9.15pm.
