The awards were given to more than 50 of the region’s most dedicated community contributors.

The awardees were honoured for their outstanding contributions to the community in areas including the arts, environment, education, health, sport, heritage and pastoral care.

Member for Monaro John Barilaro said they were a small way of thanking volunteers for the work they do.

“These people go above and beyond the definition of their role with little recognition to make the community they live in a better place,” Mr Barilaro said. 

“Today’s entire award recipients are dedicated to their calling and make a difference to the local community; I congratulate and thank them for their efforts.”

Sporting stalwart Michael Gosier was awarded the honour for his service to sport, particularly with the Queanbeyan Tigers.

Recipient Joan Webb was recognised for her service to the Braidwood community with various community groups including the Braidwood Show Society.

Bungendore’s Greg and Debbie Simms were presented with the award to recognise their years of service to Cub Scouts and Venturers, and for their support of “just about every fundraiser around Bungendore”.

Two particularly special awards were also given out at the ceremony.

One went to Gary Grady, who has served more than 50 years as a Justice of the Peace. The second was awarded to Dayne Posthuma for his service to sport, and in recognition of his selection to represent the state at the 2016 School Sport Australia 12 years and under Australian Football Championships.

Outstanding community organisation awards were presented to the Queanbeyan Rodeo Club, Queanbeyan CWA Evening branch, Queanbeyan CWA Day branch and the Upper Snowy Landcare Group.

“Volunteers are the glue that holds many of these groups together. There are many groups that deserve to be recognised for all their dedication and hard work, this is a small way we can say thanks,” Mr Barilaro said.
