Essential Energy regional manager southern Steven Ilitch said power has since been restored, but 8205 customers were affected.
“Network protection equipment detected a fault at 8.01am and immediately operated to isolate supply to the South Queanbeyan zone substation which provides electricity to businesses and residents in Queanbeyan and the surrounding areas of Karabar, Jerrabomberra, Southbar, Googong and Carwoola,” Mr Ilitch said.
He said within 20 minutes, network operators had restored power to 5493 customers, including the Queanbeyan CBD.
“Crews from the Queanbeyan depot patrolled the powerlines and identified a possible faulty piece of network equipment just outside the South Queanbeyan zone substation.”
“Power supply was progressively restored to a majority of the customers by 9.17am.”
“Crews reconfigured the electricity network to restore power to the remaining 69 customers in Karabar at 10.55am.”
Investigations into the cause of the power outage continue.
