Giants Academy director John Quinn and GWS women's AFL recruit Jess Bibby put more than 30 boys and girls through a range of fitness, endurance and agility tests to see if they have the potential to join the system.

The AFL has been scrutinising the Giants' academy zones and they have lost the Albury and Murray region from their talent pool.

But Quinn believes Canberra can be a source of untapped talent as the Giants look to build on the rise of Jack Steele and Josh Bruce.

Steele and Bruce were part of the Giants academy system and made their AFL debut for the club, but both now play for St Kilda.

"We set up the program and we want to develop football across NSW and Canberra," Quinn said.

"We call it the opportunities program and we're working to identify talent and get them into the AFL, both boys and girls.

"If they stand out in the talent ID process, we bring them into a camp. The academy is a feeding ground for the AFL and we want to continue developing that.

"This really is the prototype for the Giants across the rest of NSW. We'll be doing a lot of this in the region over the next few years, you never know when you're going to find the next Brownlow medallist."

Canberra juniors Sam Fisher and Jordan Harper will be waiting nervously for their names to be called when the AFL draft begins on Friday.

The Giants have been developing talent in the capital since joining the AFL and they've even taken their search to shopping malls and youth detention centres. The testing program is the same group of drills Bibby did when trialling for a Giants contract in the inaugural women's AFL competition. The Giants offered former WNBL star Bibby a rookie contract and drafted four more players from Canberra.

"It's really exciting to see these athletic kids to be going through these talent ID processes," Bibby said. "It's so good to see, and especially for girls, they can see that pathway now to play AFL if that's what they want to do."
