A spokesman for NSW Rural Fire Service said the man was attending a fire at the remote Bendethra Camping area in the Deua National Park, about 200km south east of Canberra.
The firefighters had put out the smouldering wreck of a car when Mr Nieuwenhuis complained of chest pain. Soon after he became unresponsive.
NSW Rural Fire Service commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said the service's condolences are with the member's family and friends, fellow crew and brigade members.
