CBD development
The Queanbeyan CBD is potentially on the brink of a decade of major redevelopment following the progression of an unsolicited bid from a consortium of experienced local property developers. The proposal is for a mix of commercial, cinema, office, residential and carparking developments on council-owned property. The council has requested that the proponents resubmit their proposal on a staged basis in order to develop a master plan to inform a planning agreement.
Environment awards
The council walked away with two awards in the Local Government Excellence in Environment Awards. The council was the winner for the Invasive Species Management Award and received a highly commended for the Natural Environment Policies, Planning and Decision Making Award. This builds on the success of the former Palerang council’s history of seven awards in six years. The awards were for innovative use of remote piloted aircraft for mapping and identification of invasive species.
Waste transfer station
An amended development application for a waste transfer station on Gilmore Road is currently on exhibition. The submission period ends December 23, 2016.
Carols
Canberra Brass and Rhythm Syndicate will be performing at Queanbeyan’s Carols in the Park event. The event is on Sunday December 11 from 6pm to 9pm. A gold coin donation will be taken for song books and candles, with the proceeds to be distributed to assist those in need.
Jupiter windfarm
An amended development application is on exhibition for the Jupiter windfarm. The proponents were asked to address the shortcomings of the previous environmental impact statement. The approval process for this development is outside of the council’s prerogative, but there is significant community interest in the project. The documents are on the NSW Planning and Environment website and can also be viewed at Council offices until 15 February 2017.
