Queanbeyan police have named the road as a priority in recent weeks.
However, Facebook posts pinpointing the location of the police on the road have caused anguish for some community members.
Queanbeyan police sergeant Dominic Goodyer from traffic and highway patrol said police had stepped up their patrols on the road after three crashes in less than a week.
Sergeant Goodyer said police had been focusing not only on speeding drivers, but on tailgating, overtaking dangerously and overtaking on unbroken lines.
A complaint about driver behaviour received through Crime Stoppers led police to dashcam footage of the dangerous driving.
“We reviewed that and took some steps,” Sergeant Goodyer said.
“On Thursday we stopped a vehicle on the Captains Flat Road identified in that incident. As a result of that a male person will have an appearance at Queanbeyan Local Court to answer two counts of not keeping left of a dividing line.”
The penalty for the offence is a $325 fine and three demerit points.
“When people come to us with that information, we do act on that. We take their concerns quite seriously. It’s all about road safety and driver safety,” Sergeant Goodyer said.
The footage was also posted on a public Facebook page. On a separate public Facebook page, drivers have been warning when police are patrolling the road.
While some community members saw this as undermining the police approach, Sergeant Goodyer said it actually helped the cause.
“The more it gets out about the road safety issue, the better that is for the whole community,” he said.
“If people are reading that on Facebook, there is a broader effect. People acknowledge they need to slow down. If we can get that happening and they want to post up where we sit and where they have seen us, I’ve got no problem at all with that.”
