Album: Little Fictions
Artist: Elbow
Elbow are a reliable band and their new album Little Fictions is another chapter in elaborate and meditative music that is soothing, intense and rather pleasant. Singer Guy Garvey’s gravelly vocals are suited to small-town love songs and small commentaries on English community; and on Elbow’s seventh album it’s another batch of sad, gentle songs and moments of uplifting happiness.

Tunes are again built around percussive pianos and electric guitar motives that drop Elbow into a comfortable atmospheric it has inhabited for some time. The opener Magnificent (She Says) may in fact be the highlight with its big chorus and Garvey crooning as if there is no tomorrow. After the rather pedestrian The Take Off and Landing of Everything delivered in 2014, the orchestral-filled songs and gentle refrains have an air of confidence that makes for another fine Elbow album.
