The actress joined a group of drag queens onstage at New York's famed Stonewall Hotel on Tuesday for a charity gig to benefit victims of gun violence.

A video of Blanchett's performance, shared online overnight, sees her taking the stage at the historical gay rights landmark in bright red lipstick and a sparkly get-up for a dramatically lip-synced performance of Dusty Springfield's 1964 cover You Don't Own Me.

She tackles the tune enthusiastically, at one point venturing into the audience to strut amongst the club's onlookers, which included husband Andrew Upton in the front row.

Donning a 'Pussy Hat' from last month's Women's March in DC, she also later joined a fellow drag performer for a politically-charged cover of Adele's Hello directed at Paul Ryan, the Republican speaker of the US's House of Representatives.

Blanchett has been outspoken on her dislike of the US's new administration, calling Donald Trump and the alt-right's rise to the Oval Office "absurd and ridiculous" during a recent appearance on Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show.

The actress, who recently finished filming the upcoming Ocean's Eight with Sandra Bullock and Anne Hathaway, stuck around after the gig to chat and pose for photos with fans, who now have wonderful snaps of Cate Blanchett in Cate Blanchett drag to add to their mantlepieces.  

The event was organised by the Newtown Action Alliance, an activist group looking to promote legislative gun control measures in the US in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012, which left 20 children and six adults dead.

Blanchett is currently in New York performing in the Sydney Theatre Company's production of The Present on Broadway with actor Richard Roxburgh.
