The court heard the injuries had been so serious he had to be airlifted to the Canberra Hospital and he is now kept in isolation from other inmates.
The 21 year old, now living in Canberra, was sentenced in the Queanbeyan Local Court and will spend the next three months in prison.
Court documents revealed the accused spent an evening at his mother’s house in August last year.
During this brief stay he attacked the woman in her late forties, breaking her mobile phone and throwing cups at her.
The accused, known to frequently use the drugs ice and cannabis, yelled to his mother “I want you to die”, before jumping on top of her and choking her.
The woman, who requires a walking frame, had a swollen neck with finger marks imprinted in her skin as well as a blood shot eye.
When interviewed by police she cried and repeatedly said, “I can’t believe my son did this to me.”
The accused’s defence counsel said he had been stabbed by another inmate in prison while awaiting his sentencing.
She said his injuries were so significant he had to be airlifted to the Canberra Hospital.
The court heard he was now isolated at the prison for his own safety and can not participate in regular activities.
During sentencing, Magistrate Michael Antrum accepted the accused had had a “rough trot” while in prison.
He also said the accused, who had lived within dozens of separate foster homes, lacked a structured family upbringing but challenged him to take responsibility.
“It’s up to you how you want to be remembered,” Magistrate Antrum said.
“I hope you have some sympathy for what you put your mum through.”
The accused was sentenced to 10 months in prison with a non-parole period of four months.
He will be eligible for release on June 1.
