Anglican Parish of Bungendore is selling household items with funds going to the Carwoola Bushfire Appeal, while impacted residents can take them away for free.

"Phill's Emporium" opens on Saturday, a day before the Carwoola community will discuss lessons learned from the February fire in the hope of improving preparation for the future.

St Philip's Anglican Church Minister Chloe Pailthorpe said Bungendore residents showed extreme generosity by donating hundreds of objects in the past fortnight, including bikes, clothes and plants.

"As sad as they are, occasions like this bring out the best in people," she said.

"Setting up this shop is about keeping that going. We are really good at that initial emotional response, but it's the longevity and sustainability of that. It's about what families need six months down the track."

The Carwoola Bushfire Appeal, set up by the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council, had nearly reached its target of $200,000.

Minister Pailthorpe said when the appeal closes, the funds will go towards the church's emergency accommodation and food van, which had also supported affected families.

Church-goers had been busy painting the shed's walls, laying down carpet squares and installing fairy lights to make "Phill's Emporium" welcoming.

A spokesperson for Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council said $52,500 from the appeal had so far been given to residents, for immediate needs, re-establishment grants and fodder.

On Sunday the Carwoola Community Association would hold a "fire recovery planning meeting" in the community hall, led by president Ian Johnsson.

Mr Johnsson said the community had a number of suggestions for future fire preparation, including better management of road blocks, establishing an asset register and setting up refuge points.

Some thought fire trails and emergency access roads should be accessible as escape routes. Others did not agree with the priority given to fire-affected properties in the initial recovery phase.

Another concern raised was that roadside vegetation outside properties' boundaries was not sufficiently cleared.

" But some of those areas of vegetation are the only place you see some of our rare plants and flowers," Mr Johnsson said.

"There is of course counter arguments to a lot of these points. Whether much will change, I don't know, but with the council we are also surveying residents from roads that were affected to get an idea of what people's needs are."

The Carwoola fire on February 17 destroyed 11 homes and damaged 12 more.

As it was the first major bushfire in the area since the mid-80's, Mr Johnsson said some people had become complacent with fire planning, which would be a focus of Sunday's meeting.

Peter Anderson lives on Widgiewa Road and believed preparation saved his house from being engulfed in the flames, which came a few metres from his front door.

"We didn't get the emergency messages we were supposed to get so it wasn't until a fire truck drove past that my daughter knew there was a fire," he said.

"Luckily we already had our bushfire emergency plan in place and bags packed, so the kids grabbed them and left."

The fire hit the family's water tank and split to either side of the home, staying outside of the damp grass that Mr Anderson had recently watered.

Around the burnt out roads, residents continued to repair gardens and re-fence properties. The end of recovery seemed far off for many.

Mark Patterson from Patterson Rural Consulting Works said he had months of work ahead of him.

"About 20 properties need their fences fixed and they usually take at least a week," he said.

"Thankfully most people have been understanding that these things take a lot of time."
