Carwoola Bushfire Appeal update: The appeal closes at the end of May and so far has raised over $192,000 for victims. The Appeal Panel has so far distributed $72,500 to bushfire victims and earmarked a further $31,500 for immediate needs. The appeal was initially used to provide $1000 grants to families who were displaced from their homes, with further $5000 grants provided to assist them in the re-establishment of their new households.
The panel recently met with members of the Carwoola Community Liaison Group who will act as a point of liaison for the affected community. The most recent panel meeting agreed that restoration of fencing, identification and lopping of affected trees and addressing resulting erosion and weed growth were priorities. As residents continue with the process of rebuilding and finalising their insurance claims, different needs may emerge, which will direct the distribution of the remaining funds.
Heritage Festival: The Queanbeyan Region Heritage Festival is in full swing with a number of events held last weekend. The theme for the festival is ‘Questions and Change: commemorating 50 years since the 1967 constitutional referendum’ and there are still opportunities to get involved until 7 May. At the Braidwood, Bungendore and Queanbeyan Libraries you can explore YouTube clips of the Queanbeyan region before 1800 featuring the stories and voices of past and present local Aboriginals.
Meet + Make EXPO: Come along to the inaugural Meet + Make EXPO at the Bungendore Showground on Saturday 6 May from 10am to 3pm. The EXPO will showcase the amazing creatives and makers who live in the region. This is a chance to watch or get hands-on with demonstrations, workshops, and ‘come and try’ opportunities throughout the day. This will be an opportunity for local artists to showcase their work and for visitors to purchase direct from the maker.
