- Peonies are hungry plants and need to be fed at least twice a year. Experienced growers recommend Anzac and Melbourne Cup Days paying particular attention to the autumn feed when it is time to add a small handful of lime before spreading a mulch of compost and manure of about 2cm in depth.
- Check the weather for future frosts and prepare to move less hardy pot plants into warmer spots under the shelter of eaves. First year plantings of young citrus trees need to be protected with a sarlon or hessian cover attached to the top of a basic frame.
- Make a note in the calendar that Fetherston Gardens (the old CIT Weston Heritage Arboretum) will be open to the public on Saturday, May 6 (free entry) when friends of the garden will conduct tours at 11am, noon and 1pm.
- Plant the last of the spring flowering bulbs like tulips and Dutch hyacinths over the next few weeks. Set into organically rich soil in sites of full sun. Plant liliums in beds or pots for some elegant early summer bloom.
