- Prepare future planting sites for new roses in full sun, well-drained loamy soil containing a moderate amount of organic matter and a site well away from competing tree roots. If you wish to replace an old rose with a new one, remove at least a barrow load of the original soil, replacing it with new.
- If you have never had a compost heap before, autumn is an ideal time to start while you can still gather weed growth and lawn clippings (wet material) as well as autumn leaves (dry material). Layered into a heap along with kitchen waste, shredded newspaper and other kinds of organic matter then kept damp and warm, covered with a lid, old carpet or black plastic, the resulting humus will be ready next spring.
- Finish planting the last of the spring flowering bulbs.
