The six-year-old Jerrabomberra Primary School prodigy will head to America next month to race against the world’s best at the Amateur National Motocross Championship.

Hosted annually at the home of country singer Loretta Lynn in Tennessee, the track is hallowed ground for racing enthusiasts.

International superstars begun their careers at the southern American tournament, including Ricky Carmichael and Rafael’s favourite, Ryan Dungey.

His races will even be featured on the country’s national broadcaster, NBC.

Operating handlebars has come second nature to Rafael, who was riding a balancing bike at just one-and-half-years of age.

His dad and dedicated trainer, Peter, said this was the ideal start to master the balance required to zip around in the dirt.

"He sort of skipped a step by having the balance bike, so then he was on a pee-wee [50cc] when he was two-and-a-half and then a little KTM when he was three,” Mr Rossiter said.

His talent is forged through riding in dirt, mud and snow, but dad said the main skills Rafael learned was on a BMX.

Mr Rossiter said it was on these push bikes his son learned to ride slowly with control and balance.

“When you’re riding at 1km/h, it really becomes a challenge,” he said.

“A lot of parents and teachers make the mistake of encouraging their kids to ride faster, but it’s more about teaching control through riding slowly.”

Mr Rossiter said racing on the BMX was also perfect to teach riders to negotiate corners and how to best increase speed through and out of turns.

This strict training with dad will be vital in America.

The Tennessee track features many tight corners and is considered an ultimate test of a riders’ skills.

The six-year-old has already broken a wrist and fractured his arm, and dad admitted it was scary watching his baby son compete in such an injury-plagued sport.

But he said he was confident in the hard work Rafael had put in to make sure he rides with control and pose.

"That's the good thing, he's so relaxed,” Mr Rossiter said.

"As riders get older, they get more nervous. But he can ride in a very relaxed state and it doesn't phase him."

The sport has been a blessing for Mr Rossiter and Rafael’s older brother Zachary; it has allowed the family to spend countless hours bonding on their farm in Nimmitabel.

"I always ask myself, 'is he having as much fun as I am?', and if I know that's the case, we keep going."
