Located on the corner of Southbar and Candlebark Roads, the mosaics are part of a Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council project to rejuvenate the area.

Council cultural development officer, Georgina Perri, said the project aimed to get locals involved in their community.

“Council received some funding to beautify the open spaces and playgrounds in Karabar and a portion of that was given to us to do some public artwork”, Ms Perri said.

More than 40 people registered their interest to volunteer but passers-by also got involved and laid some tiles.

With designs including a bee, tree, house and smiley face, local children were particularly keen to demonstrate their handiwork.

Former councillor Peter Bray, who attended the event, said it was a wonderful opportunity for residents to be involved in their community.

“This sort of facility not only develops the area but also gives ownership of it to the community,” Mr Bray said.

Jerrabomberra local Faye Fanayan, who arrived in Australia as a Baha’i refugee more than 15 years ago, echoed Mr Bray’s comments that projects like this made people feel at home in Queanbeyan.

“The community feels like they belong to this place,” she said.

“Every time they pass they will see the art we contributed. It’s fantastic.

“I really appreciate our Queanbeyan Council.”

Residents can still get involved in the project with the last day of mosaic creating scheduled for Saturday.
