Would-be pilots take control of the replica cockpit based on a Boeing 737, the world’s most popular commercial jet.
Even though this series of aircraft was introduced in 1968, few people have even seen the inside of a cockpit, especially in the current security-conscious climate.
Many passengers sitting in the rear of a plane long to understand how to fly a modern jet.
Sitting in the pilot seat of the simulator, you get to be completely in charge.
Pilots begin with the primary aircraft controls of engine throttle, flaps, elevators, ailerons and rudder, and move on to the sophisticated instrument panels, navigational equipment, autopilot and instrument landing system.
As a pilot, you won’t be left feeling baffled by the complex array of controls and equipment either.
Sitting beside you inside the simulated aircraft will be an experienced and qualified first officer.
Each first officer has extensive simulator experience, and they all hold either a commercial or a private pilot’s licence.
All of their first officers have undergone specific training for the simulator in use, and are skilled at answering questions, explaining how the controls work, and putting their new pilots at ease. Their main task is to make sure everyone has a fantastic experience.
The variety of flight experience available is almost endless. To start with, there are over 22,000 airports from which to choose for your departure or arrival.
Add to that the choice of time of night or day, throw in a selection of weather conditions, and you can create scenarios of simple flying pleasure through to an intense challenge.
Some people get a kick out of pitting themselves against circumstances leading to real-life disasters.
Others will test themselves against some of the world’s most difficult airports, such as Princess Juliana in St Maarten.
Jet Flight Simulator Canberra took off in the first few years of operation with great popularity.
Recently, the business was taken over by new owners, Canberra locals Kerry and Trevor, who plan to take their family enterprise to new heights.
Kerry and Trevor hope to find ways to increase the number of women taking up flights, including by offering packages enabling couples to fly off into the sunset to a romantic destination, and offering flights with female first officers.
Also in the planning stages are birthday parties, corporate celebrations and events, and partnerships with Canberra colleges that are teaching aeronautics.
