That’s the idea behind Erindale Neighourhood Garden’s inaugural festival set to run from September 11 to 17.
The south side garden will host dozens of DIY scarecrows built by participating schools, daycare centres and other community group.
Why Scarecrows? Organiser Karen Macpherson explains.
“They're a great way to have youngsters be creative, think about recycling materials,” she said.
“There are so many different types you can make, they don’t need to be made out of straw.”
Those that enter are encouraged to think laterally and take inspiration from songs, story rhymes or anything theme that sparks their imagination.
There are no costs to get involved and taking part is as simple as filling in the entry form.
Bear in mind that scarecrows need to be transported to the garden site at Comrie Street in Wanniassa opposite the Erindale Centre.
After days of showcasing the scarecrows an informal judging will be held at 11am on Friday 15 September.
Winners ribbons will be presented for the most original concept, best use of recycled materials, best team entry for five age groups and the overall winner for 2017.
All teams that participate in the Scarecrow Festival will receive a free packet of pumpkin seeds – ready to plant for the Autumn Pumpkin Festival at the Neighbourhood Garden in April 2018.
