Mr Hicks also has a soft spot for Braidwood, having sat on several committees for the region, and played rugby for the Redbacks.
He stood on Palerang council from 2012 until the amalgamation. He is particularly concerned to make the region small business friendly.
“I’ve been an active participant on council, I’ve got a strong connection with Queanbeyan businesses, and I feel that the businesses have been let down” Mr Hicks said.
With the region in a stronger position to leverage state funding, Mr Hicks is keen to see the council for Queanbeyan and Palerang work together for a stronger future.
“We need to go forward. Palerang has high growth, Queanbeyan has high growth,” Mr Hicks said.
“We need to make sure all the development is done fair and reasonable, and that they don’t drop the ball in terms of the local services that they offer, rubbish, water, sewerage.”
His experience as a Palerang councilor, a civil engineer, and a longtime resident and small business owner in the region, would serve the council well, says Mr Hicks.
“We’ve achieved a lot in the five years I’ve been there,” he said.
“Not that there’s unfinished work, but that there’s more work to do.”
“It’s got to be difficult for this council to all work together for the benefit of the community” he said.
“Once everyone’s elected, we’ve all got to work together.”
