“The issues I am personally particularly passionate about are the need for the Ellerton Drive Extension - an absolutely vital piece of infrastructure critical to the future growth of our region and for which we've talked about for too long now - and the clearly articulated community priority of a cinema for Queanbeyan,” she said.
The career public servant, working in ICT, was schooled in Queanbeyan, as were her two children.
She and her family have called Karabar home for the past 34 years where they are heavily involved in sport and charity fundraising.
It is the second time Ms Spears has stood for local government on Tim Overall’s ticket.
She strongly believes in the Group A vision – a “comprehensive plan which has been in the making for the past eight years”.
The region would already have a cinema if local government listened to what local people wanted, she said.
“It's unbelievable that in 2017, with a city population of 42,000 and now an additional 16,000 extending to Palerang, we remain without such an important social element of community life,” she said.
“We could have had this by now if Tim Overall and other proactive councillors such as Trudy Taylor and Peter Bray had not been stymied by some other former councillors."
Before residents cast their votes Ms Spears hopes they think about each candidate’s ability to deliver.
“Promises are easy - particularly for some at election times - but delivering results is hard,” she said.
“We've seen so many visible, positive changes over the last few years and for this to continue, we need proactive, positive, experienced people on council."
