Mr Butt is the second candidate on Kenrick Winchester’s Group F ticket.
As president of the Googong Residents Association Mr Butt is heavily involved in his community and hears what is important to residents and what they’re unhappy about.
He cites the proposed cemetery at Old Cooma and Burra Roads as just one of many examples where council projects have had a lack of consultation with affected parties.
Should he be elected Mr Butt said he would want to be part of a council that included residents and encouraged their participation.
“A fresh start and change in direction is needed for Queanbeyan-Palerang and that begins with being more inclusive and transparent with the community,” Mr Butt said.
“As a member of council I would ensure that all residents have an opportunity to raise concerns and propose innovative ideas to make their town more enjoyable.”
Several of the candidates running on Kenrick Winchester’s ticket have highlighted the social benefits of sport and while Mr Butt agrees, he wants to see more done to engage young people outside of sport.
“Sport harnesses and develops many skills, but identifying other areas of discipline to enrich the non-sporting youth outside of school is my focus,” he said.
Mr Butt said that young people should be a priority for any council as they will be the community leaders of the future. He said implementing a youth advisory council, or something that gets young people’s opinions on community issues could have a huge benefit.
