According to the ABS, less than 6% of people over 65 are currently in aged care.

“COTA ACT works with, and for, older people to ensure they live their lives to the fullest” begins Jenny Mobbs, their Chief Executive Officer.

“Older Canberrans have an interest in diverse activities. They expect more from their future than previous generations” Ms Mobbs continues.

“Whether it be a social group, or education class or assistance to help you stay in your own home, COTA ACT is able to assist you to get the most out of life.”

COTA ACT works with tens of thousands of older Canberrans every year through the ACT Seniors Card scheme, the Seniors Information Line, as well as the various workshops, events and programs that they run during the year. 

“ACT Seniors Week is a highlight for our older community” notes Ms Mobbs.

“The week provides a platform for the community to connect with older people to give them information and opportunities for them to explore and grow.”

COTA ACT collaborates with a number of organisations and government departments to put on events and workshops of interest to older people. 

“This year we have put on events about energy saving, staying in your own home, using My Aged Care and palliative care.

“Coming up we have events about arthritis and health and driving.”

COTA ACT also administer the ACT Seniors Card scheme.

“The ACT Seniors Card scheme gives seniors access to a range of concessions and savings that can assist them to get out and about in the community” Ms Mobbs explains.

“ACT Seniors Cards can get people significant discounts on a range of goods and services – ranging from tourists attractions, to coffees through to interstate accommodation.”

If are you aged over 61, live in the ACT, and do paid work for 20 hours or less each week, you are entitled to an ACT Seniors Card. 

Applications for an ACT Seniors Card can be made at any Access Canberra Service Centre, ACT public library or the COTA ACT office.
