This is something that 27-year-old Canberra woman Alex has learned since being diagnosed with stage four melanoma.
Alex began a form of immunotherapy three weeks ago only trialled on 125 Australians prior and has been in and out of hospital since.
What Alex has also learned is that she has a very committed and proactive group of friends and family around her.
Together they have banded together to form Team Alex and have dedicated themselves to helping her get through this tough time.
On October 27 Team Alex will be hosting a fundraising trivia night with all proceeds going to help Alex through her difficult treatment.
Her close friend Allison Moy has been heavily involved and said the group could not sit idly by while Alex dealt with her illness.
“When you get sick, particularly like this, the world doesn’t stop,” Ms Moy said.
“While your world might be falling apart, there are still many bills that come in, including some you had not anticipated.
“Our goal is to help share this burden for Alex, if we can spread it lightly over a lot of people it’s much more manageable.”
Team Alex has already put in an admirable effort raising $8000 through a GoFundMe campaign.
Many businesses have stepped up to help the cause and to assist in the trivia night. The evening will include silent auctions and raffles and there is so far more than $2000 in vouchers to local businesses and signed jerseys donated by the Brumbies and Matildas.
“Alex has been pretty overwhelmed by the support,” Ms Moy said.
“You can really tell she’s just so grateful.
“She’s the kind of person that would never expect things from people but she’s the type of person that would do anything for anybody.”
If you would like to support Team Alex you can purchase tickets for the trivia night online.
It will be held at the Raiders Club Belconnen on October 27 from 7pm.
