The Queanbeyan Resource Recovery Facility and Waste Transfer Station planned to be built just off Canberra Avenue would be only 250 metres from homes.
Nearby residents are concerned their homes will be affected by odour, litter and noise from the site that is expected to receive 95,000 tonnes of waste a year.
The Southern Joint Regional Planning Panel will meet to decide the next step of the project and according to the Planning Panels Secretariat the aim of the meeting will be to come to a conclusion.
If the panel members decide further issues require attention before a final decision is possible it will be deferred with no indication if the matter would be revisited this year.
Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council are preparing submissions for the panel members which will include the findings of a public consultation process.
A council spokesman said the council was unable to comment at this time on the project. The recently elected council are yet to decide a stance on the issue.
At the time of writing the project had yet to appear on the agenda for Wednesday’s council meeting, the only scheduled meeting before the JRPP meeting.
If the JRPP members reach a conclusion at this meeting the $3 million project will be ready to go ahead.
Members of the community have also expressed disappointment in the scheduled meeting time of midday on a weekday saying it inhibits many from contributing.
The Planning Panels Secretariat said it was the only available time that worked with panel members schedules and venue availability. She said efforts were made to schedule meetings either after work hours or during lunch breaks to boost community involvement.
The meeting will be held at The Uniting Church on Rutledge Street, Queanbeyan at 12:00pm on October 18.
To register to speak at the meeting residents are encouraged to contact the Planning Panels Secretariat before 4:00pm on October 16 on 02 8217 2060 or email enquiry@planningpanels.nsw.gov.au
