The little boy, who can only be identified as Joseph, endured weeks of abuse at the hands of his mother and her partner before he died in a Sydney hospital on August 6, 2014, sentencing remarks published by Supreme Court Judge Peter Johnson have revealed.
Joseph had been flown to Westmead on August 3 for treatment of injuries the two accused claimed he suffered while playing in a park with the family’s two dogs.
But Joseph’s mother, identified only as LN, was charged with his murder on September 15, 2014 and her partner, identified as AW, was charged with murder on September 17, 2014.
Both were found guilty of murder by a jury in April and sentenced in the Supreme Court on Thursday.
LN was jailed for 44 years, with a non-parole period of 33 years, back-dated to her arrest on September 15, 2014. She will be eligible for parole on September 14, 2047.
AW was jailed for 40 years, including 30 years’ non-parole, back-dated to September 17, 2014. He will be eligible for parole on September 16, 2044.
