I recall the day I first strolled into the forest. My eyes were drawn skyward to a cathedral of majestic trees, mesmerised by the breathtaking vista which lay before me. That was over 25 years ago. Such was my lasting impression of my first visit to an arboretum of the mountains.

You will find this hidden gem, a treasure trove of exotic rare conifers sourced from around the globe, nestled high in the Brindabella Ranges, perched above the meandering Cotter River.
Bendora Arboretum is the sole surviving arboretum within Namadgi National Park. Established in the 1940s to study, display and preserve exotic softwood species, Bendora Arboretum is akin to a living breathing science experiment. This remarkable site is now home to a magnificent array of mature conifers standing as one.
Its intrinsic values are beyond any monetary worth.
The fact the arboretum stands today is testimony to the herculean efforts of those of us called upon to battle the 2003 firestorm. It was through meticulous planning, diligent efforts, passion and commitment that Bendora Arboretum was saved from the ensuing catastrophic inferno, a conflagration of immense promotion which engulfed the mountains.
Through the collaborative efforts of The Friends of ACT Arboreta and the Parks and Conservation Service, a stunning walking track has today been established within the heart of Bendora Arboretum. This wonderful heritage walk ambles past towering 75 year old conifers, offering fascinating insights as to their ecological significance through highly informative, engaging interpretive signage.
The rare Clanwilliam Cypress (Widdringtonia wallichii) has been replanted with seedlings raised from the original tree, which was planted some 80 years ago. This underscores the scientific role Bendora Arboretum continues to play today in conserving exotic trees of international significance.
Bendora Arboretum is located on the Mount Franklin Road just five kilometres south of Bulls Head Picnic Ground. From the car park it’s a short 30 minute leisurely stroll to the arboretum. Like mine, all those years ago, your senses will be overwhelmed on arrival.
