“That is certainly an area that ContentKeeper Technologies have been focussing in for the last 18 years” starts David Wigley, the company’s CEO.
He tells us that “You can get your security up from almost zero to the 90-odd percent level just by doing some pretty simple things.”
The first one is something most users are familiar with and that is a firewall.
“Most importantly, manage where your users are going, and certainly stop them going to things that are undesirable.”
You need to avoid “having malware coming into your environment, going out and grabbing more malware and downloading it.”
To do this “You can block direct access to IP addresses on the internet. And the reason you’d do that is because a lot of malware wants to just go straight to an IP address.”
When “You block that little avenue off” the result is “you get rid of a lot of malware communications, and your organisation becomes a lot more secure.
“There’s a lot of managing policies to manage what your staff can actually access on the internet. That goes a long way to increasing your security.”

For home users, “probably the biggest and easiest thing for them to do to increase their security is to make sure they always use a different browser when they’re accessing banking” or other secure communications.
“A lot of malware, when it’s downloaded, will stay in memory, and if you’re still using the same browser the chances are that it’s got an opportunity to infect your systems.”
If you have a company, “look for systems that offer you multiple different layers for security, because internet security is all about piling on different technologies to beat different issues.”
In that multi-layered solution “you’d need something like an anti-virus gateway, a web filtering system, something that’s going to look at the behavioural analysis of internet traffic, something that’s going to look at what’s going in and out as far as data leakage goes.
“There’s all sorts of different techniques. And generally if you’re looking to secure the environment you really need to do all of them.”
He told us about other techniques too. “Geosensing is where you limit where people can browse by geographic location.”
If there are parts of the world where you have no need to do anything online you can shut down access to that entire region, even whole countries.
That means there will be no traffic going to or coming from IP addresses in those regions. “That’s another easy way of securing your environment.”
Another thing you need to consider is the reporting system. Having a security system and not knowing what it’s doing is not real helpful.
“You also need to have the ability to block things.
“You have to know the threat’s happening” and you’ve got to be able to do something about it.
