Low in High School

Morrissey’s disdain for the media is palpable in his brilliant new track Spent the Day in Bed. “Stop watching the news,” he begs, in that gloom-filled voice of his that’s dominated alt-rock for longer than most of us can remember. On his 11th album, punchlines fly left, right and centre filtered through jangly-Smith like tunes but mostly the modern rock flourishes he’s inhabited since 2004’s You Are the Quarry. Patchy in places yes, but nevertheless the greatest lyricist of our time never fails to deliver philosophical gems laced with sarcasm and irony.
