A family-oriented party was organised in Town Park featuring live performances, activities and information stalls.
The event is coordinated by a committee with representatives from multiple local organisations that work in the disability area such as Treehouse and Ability Links.
Committee member Brooke Hardy said the event was a chance to celebrate people in our community with a disability, their achievements and talents.
Some of the activities on the day included face painting, a jumping castle, pony rides, sumo suits and more.
Canberra’s The Voice contestant Lucy Sugerman performed as did the Dream Team, a dance group consisting of young people with a disability.
Amy Nelson from Ability Links said a key goal was to remove the stigma around disability and embrace people as they are.
“We like to say that disability puts the D in diversity,” Ms Nelson said.
“A big part of disability pride is acknowledging disability as part of who a person is so we can celebrate that person for the wholeness of who they are.”
She added that Queanbeyan had always been, in her experience, a disability friendly city.
“As somebody with a disability, who spends a lot of time in Queanbeyan, I find the town is one the most welcoming and flexible places that I’ve spent time in,” she said.
“People are so used to welcoming people from all different backgrounds and all different walks of life so we’re well positioned to be adaptable for people.”
People attending the event were able to fill out cards stating what they appreciated about Queanbeyan on one side and what they wished to see in the town.
Ms Nelson said the positives generally revolved around feeling welcome and a part of the community.
The accessibility of parks and recreation areas was also a plus.
One area which repeated as a room for improvement was the accessibility of public toilets. More could be done to acommodate people using mobility scooters.
