Two worthy charities will receive a boost this festive season thanks to the community getting behind them to spread some Christmas cheer.
Residents in Googong are currently holding a food drive with all donations going to St Benedict’s to help them continue delivering food parcels during the busy holiday period.
Googonian Rosalie Ryan initiated the food drive wanting to give back to the community.
“I just think it’s important to think about others and those that are less fortunate, particularly at Christmas,” Ms Ryan said.
“I know the community [in Googong] has a really good heart.”
Ms Ryan has run several other initiatives locally, such as gathering donations for the ‘share the dignity’ cause, and said she has always found Googong and Queanbeyan very generous.
“If everyone in Googong just added one tin or food package we could make such a difference.”
The food drive has already generated several donations of food and will continue throughout next week.
Donations of non-perishable food are welcome at the Googong Sales Office within Club Googong.
In the 2016-17 financial year St Benedict’s provided more than 15,000 hot meals and more than 2000 food parcels for those less fortunate or in crisis in Queanbeyan.
Donations of tea and coffee, UHT milk, baked beans, pasta and other non-perishable staples are particularly helpful.
Performing arts group Kaleidoscope have also decided to get into the Christmas spirit by hosting a festive play for HOME in Queanbeyan.
The performance will be a musical set in a retirement home for old musicians while the characters attempt to organise a Christmas concert.
The comedy will feature many soloists and musical accompaniment.
Kaleidoscope director Vivian Arnold said while the group gets a thrill out of performing they particularly enjoy being able to give back to the community.
“I have a lot of sympathy for people dealing with a mental illness and to be homeless as well is unimaginable so [HOME] is a wonderful cause to contribute to,” Ms Arnold said.
The performance is on at the Queanbeyan Uniting Church on Rutledge Street at 2pm on Saturday and Sunday.
Tickets are available at the door at $15 for adults and $10 for concessions with money going to HOME.
