Katrina West, 39, from Batemans Bay had three charges of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm brought against her by NSW Police.

Prosecutor Danielle Byrne told the court West admitted to police in a recorded interview that she had injected ice on Monday evening and Tuesday morning before then driving from Batemans Bay to the ACT.

West was due in the ACT Magistrate’s Court for a charge of driving with methamphetamine in her oral fluid.

The court heard she arrived in the ACT but did not appear before a magistrate. It was while driving back to the coast that the accident occurred about 16 kilometres from Braidwood.

It is alleged West fell asleep at the wheel before crossing onto the wrong side of the road and colliding with a sedan and SUV.

Five people required treatment at Canberra Hospital, including 13-year-old Thomas Campagna from Jerrabomberra who was airlifted from the crash scene.

West was on a good behaviour bond at the time of the accident.

In calling for bail to be refused, Ms Byrne said the very serious effect West’s actions had on innocent people needed to be considered.

“She is a very serious danger to the community and potentially to herself,” she said.

West’s defence lawyer told the court her client insisted she did not have a problem with drugs and had expressed remorse over the accident.

In opposing bail the Queanbeyan Local Court registrar agreed with Ms Byrne that West presented an “unacceptable risk” to the community. West will return to court in January.
