The pool will be hosting a summer activation event with the centrepiece being the unveiling of the new structure.
It will comprise three zones: a toddler splash pool, water slides and a third zone comprising water fountains and water guns.
The toddler pool and water fountain area will both be wheelchair accessible, a key reason behind the project according to mayor Tim Overall.
“This wet play area will be the only one of its kind in the region, and will provide a great incentive for patrons, both local and across the border, to visit our facility,” Cr Overall said.
“We are striving to give people of all ages and abilities the opportunity to enjoy this wet play area.”
Senior pool attendant Kieran Jackson said the staff were expecting the new structure to bring a big boost in visitors to the pool.
“This is a great way for us to give back to the community, to say thank you for supporting us over the years,” Mr Jackson said.
“We want to provide the best service for the community that we can.
“We’re really excited to be bringing this to Queanbeyan Pool, we’re expecting it to be one of the busiest summers we’ve ever had here.”
With news the cost of entry to public pools would be increasing in the ACT from $6.50 to $8.00 over the next three years with children prices rising from $4.70 to $5.60, Queanbeyan Pool may be able to capitalise.
Current entrance fees for Queanbeyan Pool are $6.00 for adults and $4.00 for children. A council spokesman said the pool is believed to have the lowest admission fees in the region to encourage participation and usage.
The new wet play area is being constructed by Swimplex Aquatics who have completed works at Wet’,n’Wild Sydney, the Australian Institute of Sport and for a number of councils nationwide.
The pool is sure to remain a popular spot for school holiday activities. Other options for parents include the Queanbeyan YMCA which runs daily activities/excursions, Q-One indoor sports program currently at Bicentennial Hall and the library.
